Sjogren’s Syndrome – A Blessing In Disguise!

Healthy Old Mike

Fitness Is Not A Destination!

My name is Mike, I am nearly 60 years old and I have an autoimmune disease called Sjogren’s Syndrome.

A few years ago, in many ways I was incapacitated with fatigue and inflammation throughout my body which are both symptoms of this terrible disease. The disease was progressing much worse as indicated by my rheumatologist, as my stress levels were too high due to many life challenges that all of us are presented with and can use as an excuse to stop trying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Healthy Old Mike do to stay fit and ward off Sjogren's Syndrome?

Throughout my life I have always been physically active, and fitness was always an important part of my life.  I played hockey, baseball, soccer, basketball and tennis at competitive levels.

6 years ago, when I was told by my doctor after a blood test that I had Sjogren’s syndrome I read as much as I could about the disease and realized that it was up to me to beat the condition by staying active.

If you stop moving, you will die. It is that simple.  In other words, a state of limited movement will only worsen my condition.

It is for that reason I work out 5 times per week and I am very diligent to eat healthy foods. I avoid sugar which I find gives me cravings to want to eat more and then I feel lousy.

I turn 60 years old in November and I can still do many of the same physical exercises that I was able to do in my 20s. In fact, I still play competitive ball hockey with teammates that are 3 decades or more younger than me.

If you think you are defeated, then you will be defeated. I know the only reason I am alive and still have an active live is because I exercise.  If I don’t exercise for 2 days or more my body starts to stiffen up and I feel the onslaught of my condition. For that reason, I have to stay active every day.

If you have no conditions that stop you then you have no excuses not to look after your body.  If you have a condition, then use your mind to push through it. If I can do it then anyone can do it!
